Possibly a dumb question, but would anyone have any detail of how the Australian Californian Turbos ( '87-'89 ) differed from the US ones?

On the US sites, it is stated that '87 - '89 turbos come standard with LSD ( finned cover), and the smaller T28(?) turbo, while I haven't pulled anything apart, the diff in my '88 turbo has a smooth cover, which implies that it either never had the LSD, or it lost it somewhere in the last 20 years, I'd be interested to hear whether the other late turbos generally have the LSD, or not?

On the turbo, once again, US specs say that the late models had higher compression and a rather smaller turbo, which seriously limits boost potential, without pulling parts off I can't see the turbo to work out which one I have, be interested to hear what others who have actually worked on the late model turbos have found?

I do know that the Australian ECU numbers don't match the US ones for given years, and therefore it would seem likely that other details differ, too, if anyone had any insight on the matter I, for one, would be all ears.

Thanks,

Neale

I believe timbo will tell you he pulled a T3 off his Cali.

The real truth is no-one really know what Australia got from the factory.

I'm sure there are people that know. A little research might help. A few aussie magazine articles from the 80s might help. If that fails, maybe someone at Nissan might know.

From what I have read we never got LSD from factory. All of our californians are turbo mostly auto and all 2+2.

Mick has a few interesting stories that kinda throw things outta wake. Dave who i think is still a member on this site has an 88 and its got a T28 on it, don't remember what the diff is. I had a T3 on mine and no LSD so its a bit wierd what Nissan done. I doubt someone would put a T28 in place of a T3 so i guess it would be factory.

I have the Aus sales brochure for the S2 300ZX, and there were very few options you could choose. The only real things you got to pick were body colour and transmission type by the looks, lol. All chassis were definitely 2+2 targa roof. Interior seemed limited to brown :o It seems to indicated LSD was across all the range, however knowing what diff's Nissan put in their car's in the 80's it seemed to vary a lot, some good tight single spinners performed similar to LSD's and also vice versa.

So we pretty much got the arse end of what Japan couldn't sell....

Im pretty sure I remember reading the Cali recieved a smaller turbo in the US due to emissions, no other models of the Z31 were effected so we pretty much got whatever the Jap model had. The finned LSD cover is a 'nismo' option in Japan, so maybe the US were just lucky...

For the 240Z and 260Z is wasn't We got the better 240z/260z with 5 speed gearboxes and firm springs. USA got 4 speeds and soft springs.

It was all down hill from there as far as Z's in Australia are concerned untill the 350Z, US got the 280Z with efi, then the turbo 280ZX and 2 seater models of the 280zx and Z31, Z32.

Though Australia was the only country apart form Japan where the R32 GTR was sold new form the dealer, as far as I'm aware.

If only I was old enough to get one from new!

Wait, so does that mean a grey import 32 is only worth as much as a local? Or would no one know the difference?
