that looks the goods very similar setup to my 86
i can appreciate that setup however, at a cost of a few hundred 200-300 more on Kojacks car we have gained
height, damper, camber adjustment all around.
track increase and braking capacity if you dont mind doing some non- traditional mods its THE best band for your buck mod, just ask ZED-X he rated it.
Although i can sympathise with you cause i did the same with mine to stay "true" its just what your end goal with the car is and if ive got anything to say with it Kojack will be getting it sideways as possible lol :)

Okay so I finally got photos of the original brackets for the shock. This is the reason why I didn't modify them:

If you compare that to the coilovers, it ain't gonna fit. You maybe could modify the bottom bracket and add in some steel to bolt the coilover onto... you'd gain the height of the bracket in ride-height (not much really) but you'd have a weld that is going to be weaker then the surrounds.

I'm sure someone with a bit more engineering nouse then me can work out how to do it properly.

You can buy Cusco & JIC pillow ball rear top hats for the Z31.... The path I am going down for my race car is simply R32 GTS-T (not gtr/gts4) rear coilovers with the Cusco Z31 top mount. The reason for R32 ones is they are closer dimensions to the stock Z31 ones, so you have more to play with adjustability wise, especially if your coilovers are base height adjustable.... Just a thought...

Wouldn't happen to know where from would ya? I mean, mine's all done, not going to touch it unless there are issues, but just for general info...

I got mine of Yahoo auctions, used obviously. I assume you can still get them brand new, just trying to find someone in Aus that can get them in. Powerplay Imports do a lot of Cusco stuff...

I was underneath my car most of the day (Oh the innuendo!) and saw that my coilovers have some dents from the actual frame/bar (forget the word I'm looking for atm) so if I were to do this again (for street legal) I'd look into these Cusco bits. If I remember tomorrow I'll take pics of the dents to show what may happen (they are dents, but who knows how long until its serious damage).

Yeah I wouldn't mind to see what your talking about there... My only concern with fitting rear coilovers is the fact from standard all the weight from the car is taken from the factory spring seat location, and not the upper strut tower. I wouldnt want the weight of the car to bust apart this section, could get dangerous.

If you notice the marks just before it goes cylindrical, that's what I think is caused by the frame hitting it over big bumps. That's my theory at least.

Yea I was talking to Barry about the rears now taking all the weight of the rear end, and he said that you can run it fine, you just have to inspect it regularly. He knows a bloke where the bottom of the coilover sheared off at 140kmh. With regular inspection you should be able to spot the metal starting to deform and fix it (brace/strengthen) Another option is to cut the springs to the height you want and re-install them not so much for the suspension side, but for taking the weight off the coilover.

Needless to say I've gone with the inspect/strengthen option. I've gotta take it down to a crash repair to get some damage on the frame fixed, so at the same time I'll get them to strengthen the bracket at the very least.

What we need is something more like this:
Image

Far left and far right of the image, springs on adjustable perches, to suit the rear end of a VT-VZ commodore, which have very similar suspension to the zed (semi-trailing arms) The only problem with the above is the springs are too fat.
